I collaborate with organizations to establish and implement effective practices that prioritize the mental and physical well-being of their employees. My focus is on supporting organizations in meeting their ethical and legal duty of care obligations, while cultivating a positive workplace culture.
With over 20 years of experience in developing and delivering training programs related to staff security, risk management, and well-being in the aid sector, I offer bespoke solutions designed for international, regional, and country offices.
My approach includes coaching individuals and teams to enhance resilience. Together, we work on improving their ability to identify safety risks, respond effectively to crises, and mitigate the effects of burnout and traumatic incidents. I can also offer individual therapy to employees if required.
Ensuring staff safety and security is essential for organisations to meet their legal and ethical duty of care obligations. I support organisations to improve all aspects of security risk management (SRM), whether through reviewing specific incidents (After Action Review AAR), organisation wide SRM audits and organisational development, or capability development and training programmes.
Management and organisation support are essential for the wellbeing of staff, and this is particularly true for human service professionals, including humanitarians, who are exposed to many external and internal stress factors. The right organisational culture enables staff to trust the organisation to look after their safety and security, both physical and psychological. This supportive organisational culture creates and maintains an effective workforce. Recognising that a "one-size fits all" approach is not effective for an organisation to meet their duty of care responsibilities is essential.
Improving security risk management (SRM) has many levels, a serious incident often precipitates the need for change and an external review of the process before, during and after an event can be essential for ensuring an organisation learns. Including this as part of an organisational wide SRM audit can create an opportunity for positive change. Staff retention is often driven by lack of trust in an organisation that does not demonstrate active learning.
Even better is to run SRM audits on a regular basis and maintain staff engagement in ongoing organisational development for safer staff.
With the localisation agenda it is essential to work with partner organisations to ensure they are also able to meet their obligations for staff safety, security and well-being. Organisational development and training programmes designed to facilitate a risk sharing approach means partner organisations have the tools they need for appropriate and effective security risk management enabling better programme sustainability.
My experience in country offices in multiple locations and management roles, followed by my work as the Executive Director of the Global Interagency Security Forum (GISF), my passion for inclusivity and equity, and last, but not least, my experience in mental health and stress management, provide me with a unique set of skills and knowledge for organisations wanting to develop a safe and effective workforce.
Ensuring organisations learn from experience is essential for growth. I find facilitating these learning moments with organisations a great opportunity for positive change, whether through stress testing, security audits or after action reviews.
I have been developing capability building programmes and delivering training for staff safety and well-being within the aid sector for many years now. This includes both bespoke and open courses developed with and for headquarters, regional and country offices. Topics covered include personal security, security risk management, crisis planning and response; as well as organisational culture and change management.
I continue to develop my understanding of the fundamental relationship between physical and mental well-being and this is incorporated into the services I offer. With my unique experience, I am in an excellent position to support organisations, teams and individuals to build resilience. Taking a community or team approach with peer to peer support and a positive management culture, supports the capability of individuals, teams and organisations to deal with day to day stressors, vicarious trauma, serious incidents and crisis – and make better security decisions.
I work with a variety of different experts to ensure I continue to grow and update my skills and knowledge.
